Seeing a problem from an unusual perspective can create a healthy opportunity. For example, how is the nursing shortage shifting the hiring marketplace?
Dr. Iman Abuzeid is the co-founder and CEO of Incredible Health, a digital platform that helps streamline the hiring process for nurses and recruiting hospitals. After seeing an increased demand for nurses in April, and a shift to hiring digitally, the platform has now solved a problem by shifting the dynamic of how nurses get hired.
Incredible Health connects hospitals with nurses and other high shortage healthcare professionals to speed up the hiring process.
Using the latest in automation, data, and recruiting technology can provide a fantastic experience for both sides. They can also address customers’ mission-critical needs–having enough exceptional staff to deliver top-quality care to patients, while also driving revenue and reducing costs.
Seeing the Challenge Anew
Instead of having nurses apply to hospitals, Incredible Health flipped things around to have hospitals apply to the nurses.
It is like a matchmaking service but where the power goes from employer to prospective employee.
This unusual model is the brainchild of Iman, Incredible Health’s resident health and business nerd. A former medical doctor, she’s a McKinsey alumnus and led product management at health tech startups. She also fit in getting a Wharton MBA somewhere in-between.
As CEO, she champions Incredible Health’s mission of helping healthcare professionals live better lives and find and do their best work. Used by hundreds of hospitals across the US, Incredible Health has raised $17 million from top tier firms like Andreessen Horowitz to fuel its mission. Nursing will never be the same.
Lessons in Fresh Views
- If supply and demand have shifted in your industry, can you enable a new way to connect parties? There could be opportunities to have employers bidding on hard-to-finding skilled and unskilled labor based on market needs. Nurses aren’t the only professionals in low supply but high demand. Extrusion operators, mechanics, truck drivers, and even digital marketing professionals are in high demand and short supply.
- Can you redefine your challenge from a new vantage point? Some opportunities for startups occur when you view the challenge from a unique point of view. Check out Amber Smith’s Activate Good nonprofit matching volunteers with nonprofit’s needs. Amber saw the challenge of volunteering as a matchmaking need and has done remarkable work in the community matching more than 70,000 people with needs.
- What’s the opposite of everyone else? What can you remove or focus on in a market segment that no one else pays attention to? IKEA upended the furniture marketplace by making customers do the assembly. Louboutin shoes all have red souls – no one else ever used the soul as a signaling device for a brand.
When you have a challenge, see if you can find a new vantage point to see the problem. Instead of viewing it from your perspective, think about the entire value chain and how you could spend it like Dr. Abuzeid saw nursing challenges.
Find a healthy and new vantage point. You’ll feel better.
