One of my clients needed to guide several agencies about her brand’s voice. What is the brand’s voice? It is how a brand uses words, attitude, and value when communicating with their audience. It is how your brand personality comes to life to the outside world. For the exercise, we had about eight stakeholders from within the company do the activity called –
WE ARE/WE ARE NOT
This simple exercise works like this:
- We are honest and dependable. We are not deceptive.
- We are good at listening. We are not always talking and ordering others around.
- We want happy customers. We are not afraid to walk away from unreasonable customers who are unkind.
In Your Voice
After each person created ten statements, we had each person read them aloud. It allowed everyone to hear the brand voice – in everyone’s voice.
I took all of the statements and condensed them into 50 things we are and 50 things we are not.
- Everyone in the company will get a copy of this document.
- New employees, who go through an onboarding process, will get a copy to read.
- Agencies from marketing, sales, and operations will all be asked to read through this brand statement too.
The beauty of this exercise is having a clear understanding of what the brand stands for and how brand ambassadors should behave. We did a few other activities but having this read-aloud helped to reinforce the personality of the brand. When a company has a clear brand voice, their message, personality, and image are consistent.
