The curious marketer notices that both sparkling wine and flavored seltzer are growing by leaps and bounds. She sees patterns and trends where others see disparate data points. Connecting dots is part of her daily routine as she observed unexpected occurrences. Why are bubbles in vogue? What is driving growth in two different categories that have one element in common?

When she learns about something new, like subscriptions to buy cars, she wonders, why is that happening today? What does it say about owning expensive things? How might it influence other businesses? Will people get subscriptions to other costly purchases like homes, appliances or lawn mowers? She looks outside of her category to understand cultural influences.

The curious marketer asks why a lot of probing questions and wants to know, how you know something is true? What is your evidence? What makes you believe in those facts? How come you think these observations will remain true for the next six months?

Marketing with a Curious Lens

If you aren’t oddly interested in things, you’ll miss what is in front of you.

If you are marketing your products and services in the center space of your industry, it will be difficult to get noticed. You’ll blend in without having a difference. Your law practice will be like every other. The umbrellas you sell will be just a commodity, without anything remarkable. That new financial software will blend into every other competitor. The center isn’t a great place for marketing. Most of the curious marketers I respect like to hang out around the edges – in the unanticipated neighborhoods.

Curious marketers like words like abnormal, odd, peculiar, bizarre, weird, eccentric, unexpected, unfamiliar, incongruous, unconventional, offbeat and unorthodox.

Are you unconventional enough to be a marketer?

I’m sufficiently odd and strange, so I qualify as a marketer. You can set up a time to chat with me about your marketing challenges using my calendar.
