Who was that teacher who gave us the helping hands and worked patiently with us as we tried to learn the most challenging subjects in high school?
What’s the name of that co-worker who patiently showed us how to do a little magic with Excel or how to animate a PowerPoint presentation?
Are you able to picture that boss who patiently gave us time off when you had some personal challenges that needed attention?
I/We Did It
It is so easy to want to introduce ourselves to someone and say, I did this great and wonderful thing. Our resumes are plump with accomplishments. Check out our LinkedIn profiles and you would think we did it all ourselves.
We pretend we didn’t need the hands of a friend to get where we are today.
But we all know the truth.
We stand on the shoulders of others who lent us their hands.
Mindful of Ten People
Sometimes when I meditate, I like to think about the people who have made a meaningful difference with both my personal and professional life.
George, Mike, Ron, Britt, Joanne, Bob, Lars, Anne, Michael, and Paul are but a few of those who helped me.
Mindful of their kindness, I count them and remember those who helped me. I say thank you, quietly.
Business owners and managers who are self-aware and grateful for those helping them succeed, approach marketing, and their business in general, from a service mindset. By seeing themselves as helpful, they become more effective marketers.
Our tribe is everything, and we should never forget it. We know who we serve and instead of upselling, we need to serve. Solve their problems. Bring solutions to their pain points. Listen.
As my grandfather used to ask me each weekend when I was growing up – “who did you help this week, Jeffrey?”
When Poppa George passed away, it was up to me to ask myself that question.
