Simon Griffith and his friends decided to start a non-profit to help improve sanitation in the third-world. Most people are creating non-profits that raise funds and use those contributions to send help.

But Simon and his friends wanted to answer the question – Who Gives A Crap?

His idea – what if he and his friends could create a toilet paper company and donate half the profits to improve sanitation conditions throughout sub-Saharan African?  About 2.5 billion people or 35% of the world’s population lack adequate sanitation services that can lead to the spread of viral, bacterial and parasitic organisms that can spread into food and water.

So, Simon, Danny, and Jehan started a fundraising effort on IndieGoGo that featured Simon sitting on the toilet, live streaming until he reached the $50,000 goal.

He wiped that goal off of his to-do list and started his non-profit Who Gives A Crap.

Impact

This non-profit has donated more than 1.3MM dollars to help fight sanitation challenges to non-profit organizations working to improve access to hygiene, water and basic sanitation in developing countries. They help WaterAid AustraliaSanergyShining Hope For Communities and Lwala Community Alliance — incredible organizations with broad experience and skill in implementing high impact sanitation projects throughout the developing world. Since they started, they have helped tens of thousands of people in need.

Like Blake Mycoskie from Tom’s, Simon and his friends wanted to help solve a problem. The non-profit is a by-product of their effort. Using smart packaging and a big dose of toilet humor, their demonstrate how important marketing can be when you honestly give a crap.
