This is a guest post by Kerri Roe who I met on a LunchClub call last month. She has expertise in coaching and focuses on igniting potential. In this post, she gives some sage advice for a new manager.

Have you ever thought of what you would tell your younger self to help you be a better manager? What sage advice would you say if you could only pick the top five?

I had to think about that for a while. You would think the list would be miles long, wouldn’t you? Going back and telling myself about all the mistakes before they happened so I would not make them again. Avoid the pitfalls, the mishaps, the painful experiences, and the wrong choices.

In truth, I would only tell myself (and let’s be honest, I would’ve listened) these few things because, like most people, I best learn through doing. The mistakes I have made in my past were what brought me to where I am now.

Here are the top 5 that I feel would have made me a more robust, more confident manager.

  • Believe in yourself and stop waiting for approval from others. Don’t always try to fit in by not standing out.
  • Make mistakes and allow others to make mistakes. We learn best when we experience it, so let them learn from theirs. Learn from them move on. No one knows everything. We are all learning and doing the best we can with the information we have.
  • Ask when you need help, don’t be afraid to admit you don’t know or understand something. Try your best, and when you are stuck, don’t stay there. Please get the help you need, talk to someone about it AND come with ideas you think may work. Show you have thought about it.
  • Listen more and talk less. (I mean genuinely listen to understand, not to speak). Stop listening to lecture and prove your worth on the team. Ask more questions.
  • Trust your team and let them know you trust them. It doesn’t have to be your way. Please make sure the goals are clearly communicated and understood and then trust them to execute.

Lessons in Personal Growth

the only real mistake is the one in which we learn nothing.

I learned most of these through my personal growth experience and my journey to becoming a leadership coach. I reflected, examined, and dug below the surface to see that I knew more than what I thought I did and that the inner critic in me was holding me back too often. It’s why I created Klear Coaching.

To partner with new managers, new to an organization, and managers stuck in their roles to find the clarity and confidence to thrive in their roles as empowered leaders. Change your mindset, and it will change your life.

Remember your worth, you’ve got this, and it’s called growth for a reason.
