Whether you are cutting up an onion or knocking down a tree, the best advice is the same. Spend most of your time sharpening your tool.

Marketing strategy is about tool sharpening.

You want crisp, clear, cutting-edge clarity to make sure that every action you take is effective. You can work with a dull knife for an hour, and still, have a scallion or shallot in search of slicing. But that time spent making sure your tool is sharp, can make the job much more manageable.

Several times each week, I’ll get a call from someone starting a new business or stuck with zero growth, who needs help with their marketing efforts. I’ll relate to them the need for them to sharpen their blade, before exerting any energy on marketing.

Tool Sharpening Questions

  • Who will you serve? Be specific.
  • How will they feel after they work with you?
  • What makes your offering so remarkable, that they’ll tell their friends?
  • Why are you uniquely suited to help them?
  • How will you position yourself in a way that encourages them to work with you?
  • How can you offer a simple pricing model?
  • What ridiculous, wild and hairy guarantee can you give that makes you irresistible?

Strategy before Tactics

Before you start building websites, creating email marketing campaigns, attending trade shows or an influencer marketing campaign, start by sharpening your strategy.
