I needed to find a company who could provide IT and technical support for an e-commerce business during a market test, After researching the local options, I spoke with two companies to understand how they operate. One made things complicated and another simple. Simple Wins, again.

#1 – After one conversation, I received an email with four attachments, including a 9-page contract. I had to spend an hour reading through everything, and a lot of it wasn’t relevant to my original inquiry. Some of the information and documents were confusing and were off-putting. A lot of what was sent was unnecessary. I felt that the manager I spoke with wasn’t listening to me. I said I wanted to keep things simple for this 100-day test.

#2 -After the second conversation, this other sales manager sent me an email with four bullet points about my costs. He said that he’d be happy to give me a tour and show me how things work. In addition, he said he likes to keep things simple. He told me that he often closes more business when he simplifies stuff for clients and he heard how important that was to me for this test. He said that once we agree to the terms, there would be a simple contract in place and we can review it whenever I’m ready.

Door #2

I picked company #2 to work with because of how simple he made things for me and because he listened. My need was for a simple market test. With so much on my plate, a streamlined approach to getting started helps. The last thing I wanted was a lot of unnecessary paperwork. The ease of working with company number two helped me make up my mind which arrangement to pursue.

By making the first conversation simple, he helped me choose among the two options. Both seemed reliable, comparable in price and equally capable of helping me do what I needed. But the simplicity of the second company made me decide to work with them.  And I’m a sucker for someone who is a good listener.
