Stop and Think. Then Speak.

This shouldn’t be such a foreign idea. Sadly, it is for most business folks.

Leaders, I admire often behave in unexpected ways that on the surface seem odd. A pregnant pause might surprise you – but frequently, the best leaders use this tactic.

They take time to think before they speak.

Justin Trudeau, the Canadian Prime Minister, was asked a question about the U.S. protests, and instead of instantly speaking, he did something strange. Instead of talking, he was quiet.

Stop and Think. Then he spoke.

He took twenty-one seconds to think about what he wanted to say.

Leaders Stop and Think First and then Speak

The best leaders and bosses don’t have all the answers. They think and listen with care before they speak.

They know that their words should be more thoughtful.

Try This

Next time you are in a meeting and called on to give your opinion on an important topic, take a few deep breathes before you instinctively respond.

Think about what you want to say before you say it.

People will listen to you more attentively.

It works every time.

Want to be heard?

Stop, think, and then speak.
