Marketing Karma – The Morning
In the morning, I spent an hour helping someone I never met, didn’t know but was referred to me by a friend. I had the time and was happy to listen to her job search challenges being new to the greater Raleigh area. She recently moved from New England to North Carolina.
I gave her marketing advice that resonated with her, and we discussed many people I knew who might have opportunities. Her background was outstanding, and I recommended a few changes on her resume to her positioning and approach. We decided on a plan.
I felt grateful that I could help and wasn’t looking for anything in return except the feeling that I was able to help someone.
Somehow, the universe always has a way of providing, and I believe that karma does come in a marketing flavor. Often if you wait, it shows up and lets you take a lick.
I didn’t expect Karma to come so quick.
Marketing Karma – The Afternoon
That same day in the afternoon, I connected with a friend who I knew when I was at summer camp in The Berkshires. We were friends more years ago than I’m willing to admit out loud but let’s say we were bunkmates when Lyndon Johnson was President, and if we needed to make a phone call, we used payphones. It was so long ago; the NY Mets were a relatively new team. Online meant that you step on the line in tennis.
My long-lost friend has become a well-known TV personality/celebrity. He is hugely successful in the world of reality TV. No, not that apprentice guy.
As I learned more about him and his work, I was happy to hear about the range and scope of his accomplishments. It wasn’t that long ago, we were flipping baseball cards together at Camp Winadu.
I thought he might have some advice for my daughter Fanny who wants to have her own successful TV/online show someday. She joined the call as my friend offered marketing wisdom to her.
He explained how TV programming works in a way that I never understood. He spent an hour sharing incredibly insightful ideas and recommendations to my daughter and offered to help in ways I never expected. He couldn’t stop giving and made offers of assistance that frankly exceeded our expectations.
Somehow, the universe always has a way of providing and once again, I got to taste the flavor of marketing karma coming back toward my daughter.
Daily Marketing Karma
Somedays are so stressful and filled with clogged emotions and work-related anxiety. Twitter and social media time may spin us in circles. Work feels, well, like work; challenging, arduous and unrelenting.
But other days, things flow. Like a river. With a cadence that is easy.
Over the years, I have discovered how valuable it is to give without asking for anything in return and to accept gifts when they show up at your door. Be first to offer a hand, without expecting something in return.
Today was one of those days when being helpful and kind toward someone came right back at my family and me, seamlessly and without effort. Fluid, like water flowing
Thank you, Karma. I got your back, and apparently, you have mine.
