KFC came out with a hilarious prank this week. It illustrates something I write about often. Have fun with your marketing and make people smile. No, I don’t want to buy a log for my fireplace that smells like KFC, but I have shared this graphic with so many people because its funny.
Sometimes a great marketing idea breaks through because it is utterly absurd and makes you think about a brand in a new light. Like the IHOP PR stunt around changing their name to IHOB, this attention grabber makes me smile. By the way, the IHOP stunt generated billions of impressions in the media and they sold quite a few burgers.
KFC is known for its odd promotional gimmicks like the time they gave away 3,000 bottles of Colonel Sander’ Extra Crispy Sunscreen.
Oddly, all this publicity about KFC makes me hungry for fried chicken. (I make my own but enjoy KFC when I visit my mom).
What’s the craziest thing you could do to grab attention? As Emeril used to say, can you take it up a notch?
If you want one of these KFC fried chicken fireplace logs, you can order it here for $18.99. Coleslaw sold separately.
Grabbing attention and getting people talking about you for crazy stunts can make you top of mind – for the moment. This gimmick isn’t a long-term strategy, but a tactical activity that can give your brand an extra crunchy layer of awareness.
