I remember being in an all-day meeting many years ago, with the leadership team of a company where I worked. My colleagues complained and whined why we didn’t generate more new business. One of my colleagues asked, why aren’t sales doing their job?
My response, “we are all in sales.” There isn’t a sales department.
We Are All in Sales
Companies and organizations are filled with people who are charged with bringing in new business. But others, outside of those departments also go above and beyond expectations to satisfy the needs of their customers. When everyone sees themselves in business development, they realize the benefit of a connection they have that could be a possible customer.
They go out of their way to double-check a shipment to make sure it is perfect, and nothing is missing. Since we are all in sales isn’t a motto, but a cultural attitude. Companies need to celebrate this idea every day.
When you can demonstrate to everyone in the company examples of how someone in accounting, finance, HR, logistics or marketing helped a customer above the call of duty, others want to emulate this action.
Thank You
When the head of commercial activities thanks someone each week in the company for their role in helping maintain a customer or capture a new one, everyone sees why they too need to have a sales perspective. Sales management is both an internal and external activity. When the head of sales finds examples that she highlights and celebrates when people outside of the sales department help make a sale or maintain a customer, magic happens.
Even marketing consultants are in sales. Last week I connected a client with a former colleague who moved on to a new company. By being mindful of the opportunity, I helped generate a strong lead for my client. Sales and generating leads and connections becomes everyone’s business.
