I have always admired Bill and Melinda Gates. Not because they are zillionaires but because they have worked hard at their second act with dignity and grace. Their work in Africa to help prevent malaria is legendary. Melinda Gates recently mentioned in an interview that every year she picks one word that becomes her north star for the year. She doesn’t make resolutions.

Her word expresses her aspiration for the year.

Word

In prior years she chose words like gentle to help her deal with perfectionism. One year she picked the word spacious as a reminder that she needs to make room for the essential things in life. In 2018, she chose grace to help remind herself that she is part of something bigger than ourselves and our lives.

Her 2019 word is shine. She wants to channel the light and shine it on others in need.

This idea has inspired me to find my word for 2019 too.

My word for 2019 is Bodhi, the name of my first grandson. This word will remind me to be in this world in a way that will make him proud of his Poppy Jeff. Bodhi means spiritual enlightened or awakened in Sanskrit. Bodhi’s name is a gentle reminder to be fully present in each moment.

What word is guiding your moments this year?
