A friend asked me recently why I blog? She said you had written almost 1,000 posts since you started and I’m wondering what’s it for? It has got to take a lot of your time, and I don’t understand how you monetize this effort. Why do it if you aren’t getting paid?

I thought of twelve reasons why I blog:

  • To be helpful to others by sharing things I learned
  • To exercise my creative muscle
  • To become a better writer
  • To have a platform for my curiosity to explore things I want to know
  • To learn about new business models that are unexpected
  • To discover new brands doing extraordinary things
  • To wonder out loud and share my discoveries
  • To teach those interested in marketing
  • To stimulate discussions among like-minded friends
  • To challenge conventional thinking
  • To help me think through ideas and learn new marketing principles
  • To meet and connect with smart marketing professionals to hear their story

Why I Blog

Writing blog posts and posting them takes a lot of work. I’ll stop when it is no longer serving any of the twelve purposes outlined in my list.

I didn’t start bogging to monetize my writing or website. If a consulting lead comes in from people who read my work and like how I think, I’m appreciative.

For now, I’m grateful to thousands of people who read my ideas and to the handful who provide me with feedback or share my posts.

Comments

Recently, a woman I have never met from Florida wrote me and said that she works on a small marketing team and one of my posts helped her rethink her approach to a project. She was stuck and my writing helped.

Another guy from the UK, who has been reading my work for more than five years said that he reads my blog and feels like it is a bite-size class in marketing. And, it has been helpful in the work he does and he appreciates the worldview I present. Wow.

Blogging is like sending little balloons filled with imagination out to the universe. It doesn’t take much to make me happy.
