There is a misconception about what is marketing and when you should turn it on. Like raising a child, marketing is a daily activity and it never ends.
Marketing isn’t something that you add to your business. It is the everyday activity of what you say to your customers, how you serve them and help them achieve their goals. It is always running in the background like the GPS on your phone.
Marketing is how you serve current customers, and new customers learn about what you do and how you can help them. Yes, you can spend more money on marketing and turn on the faucet making “marketing” flow more rapidly. But that’s an amplification of your message.
Drip by Drip
I prefer the simple and daily drip of activity that involves human, personal connections. Gentle follow up to someone who appeared interested and asked for more information. Sharing kind, useful and helpful resources with a client so they can achieve their goals or doing something unexpected for a client because you want them to tell their friends about the extraordinary effort you made to help them achieve their goal.
There are two new books worth reading on these topics. Seth Godin’s new book called This Is Marketing You can’t be seen until you learn to see. And, my friend Mark Schaefer new book Marketing Rebellion The most human company wins can help you get your head around this topic.
Like pressing F5 on your PC, reading these books will refresh your understanding of my favorite business topic.
Daily Dose
Remember, marketing is how clients, customers, and prospects talk about you and your services. It is what they say about you.
Think of how you tell your friend about a great new musician, or restaurant or physical therapist. What customers say to their friends and colleagues is the essence of marketing. What do you want your clients and prospects to say about you and how will you help them become raving fans?
When is the best time to start communicating about your products and services?
That’s like asking when you should start raising your children?
Raising a child starts before you the child is born. It continues every day in every interaction. How you love, nurture and support your child is a daily ritual of helping them achieve their dreams.
Promoting a business begins before you make your first sale. Like raising a child, marketing works best when it is built into your daily life and your relationship with the community of customers you serve.
No one ever stops raising their children or sharing information about their business if they want to be successful. These activities happen daily almost running in the background.
Hold your child and your customers close to you every single day.
