When I first learned about a company selling wine condoms, I wondered who needs a condom soaked or scented in wine? And what would the alcohol do to the product?
But as I read further about this startup, I realized that this company had come up with a novel method to close an opened bottle of wine. Closing an open bottle of wine is a problem for most consumers who drink wine and can’t get the cork back in the bottle.
Screw The Cork, Use a Wine Condom
From a successful Kickstarter campaign that raised $14,000, Mitch Strahan and his mother Laura Bartlett created the ultimate protection for an open wine bottle. Made from food-grade material, the wine condom is the easiest way to close an open bottle of wine. Inspired by observing a friend close a bottle of wine with plastic wrap and a rubber band, Mitch noticed that it looked like a condom for wine.
One million dollars later, they are practicing safe secco for all their wines.
What This Startup Did Right
- They solve an everyday problem with a simple solution.
- They focused on one product, not multiple products at once.
- They cleverly branded and packaged the product. Wine condom packaging helps generate liters of publicity.
- The product works and is reasonably priced.
- They entered a category (wine closures) from a novel perspective, focusing on wine after opening, not before.
- Their website is more of a simple, landing page that educates, entertains and makes it easy to buy.
